When a loved one is reaching the end of their life, whether due to age or illness, it can often be extremely difficult for most people to know what to say or do. It is completely natural to want to be there for your loved one in a way that is as supportive as possible, and because of this many people are concerned about saying or doing the wrong thing.
Well, we’ve compiled some tips from the perspective of a hospice home health aide who often supports patients during their end of life on how to communicate with someone who might be dying.
- Reminiscence with your loved one. Many people who are towards the end of their life will want to spend some time reminiscing about different things that happened, particularly joyful occasions, memories, or accomplishments. In this instance, being a springboard to listen and also adding in your own memories of your times together is a great way to respond.
- Listen and be attentive. Those who are towards the end of their life might also express regrets over things they wish they had done or ask forgiveness for transgressions. Give your loved one space to be heard and validate their emotions when possible.
- Surround them with love. Make sure you not only bring in loved ones, but also actively tell the person who is dying that they are loved. They will need to both feel it and hear it from those around them.
- Provide physical comfort. If you’re able to hold their hand, brush their hair, or do other small physical things to provide comfort, this is another great idea, if your loved one consents of course. Often physical touch and closeness can add subconscious yet important feelings of support.
- Thank the person. Make sure they know that you are grateful to be there with them at this moment. Also, use this as an opportunity to thank them for things they might have done for you throughout your lives together.
- Ask them what they need. Often one of the best ways to support your loved one is to simply ask what would be best for them at this moment. Whether that’s for you to sit quietly with them, watch a movie, or talk about things you’ve done in the past- ask your loved one how you can best support them during this time.
